Among autumn crafts, handmade creations using natural materials take a significant share. Especially popular are leaf appliqués, such as a leaf owl. Autumn leaves, with their diverse shapes and colors, make a wonderful material for creative projects with children. They can be used to make herbariums, various appliqués, and crafts. We have chosen a relatively simple, yet beautiful and interesting craft idea for autumn — a leaf owl appliqué.
To create a leaf owl appliqué, you will need the following materials:
- Owl template. You can see the template below and download it.
- Autumn leaves. We have chosen red and pink leaves from wild grapevines.
- Glue.

Great! Let’s proceed with creating the leaf owl appliqué. Start by printing out the owl template, which depicts the bird’s silhouette. Then, apply glue to the body of the owl on the template and begin sticking the autumn leaves onto it. Since the wild grapevine leaves you’ve chosen are vibrant, clean, and evenly shaped, there’s no need to dry them. Working with freshly picked leaves can be enjoyable due to their vibrant colors and pristine condition.

Once you finish the first row of leaves, continue by gluing the next rows slightly overlapping them. This layering technique creates the feathered effect for our little owl.

After you have finished attaching the leaves and the owl’s body is complete, glue individual wild grapevine leaves on each side to create the wings. These leaves will serve as the owl’s wings, adding a nice finishing touch to your creation.
